Digital computer: is a machine(digital system) that can perform various computation. It use the binary number system, which has two digits: 0 and 1. A binary digit is called a bit. Information is represented in digital computers in groups of bits. By using various coding techniques, groups of bits can be made to represent not only binary numbers but also other discrete symbols, such as decimal digits or letters of the alphabet.

Components of a digital computer:

A. Computer Hardware:

  • memory unit (MU)
  • arithmetic and logic unit (ALU)
  • input/output unit (IOU)
  • control unit (CU)

B. Computer Software:

  • Level 6, User Level
  • Level 5, the High-Level Language
  • Level 4, the Assembly Language
  • Level 3, the System Software
  • Level 2, the Instruction Set Architecture (ISA), or Machine Level
  • Level 1, the Control level
  • Level 0, the Digital Logic Level
