What percentage of patients with ulcerative colitis of 20 years’ duration will have malignant change?

Patients with ulcerative colitis who have had chronic total colitis (affecting the whole large bowel), particularly if the first attack was in childhood, have a high risk of developing carcinoma of the colon. Statistics indicate that 5–12% of patients with colitis of 20 years’ duration will develop malignant change.
