e. Causes of fibrosing alveolitis are vast and varied. When all causes have been excluded and the diagnosis is certain it can be said that the patient is suffering with cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, e.g. of unknown cause. Rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome and ulcerative colitis are all systemic conditions that are known to cause fibrosing alveolitis. Aspergillus is associated with extrinsic allergic alveolitis as it causes an immune response by which it medicates its effects.
