b. A PDA is a defect between the pulmonary artery and the aorta. The ductus arteriosus normally closes within the first 48 hours of life. In premature babies it may remain open for longer, sometimes up to 3 months. If it remains patent longer than this it is unlikely to close spontaneously. A persistently patent ductus is a common congenital heart lesion, occurring either singly or in combination with other defects. Girls are more likely to be affected by PDA, and those affected by congenital rubella syndrome are more likely to suffer a PDA.
