e. An increase in adipose tissue in the elderly resulting in a reduction in number of insulin receptors available for glucose leads to a mild glucose intolerance. Bone changes and degenerative arthritis are responsible for an increase in alkaline phosphatase, whilst creatinine clearance reduces with age due to a reduction in the glomerular filtration rate. With age a reduction in the level of testosterone, the stimulation of erythropoietin falls resulting in a mild anaemia in the elderly.
