You will receive sufficient immunosuppressive medication to maintain your kidney transplant but not so much that you develop infections.

In the operating room, you are given induction therapy. This is high-dose immunosuppressive medication that can include Solu-Medrol, Thymoglobulin, and mycophenolate. You receive these medications in the immediate days after your surgery and then you begin maintenance therapy. The maintenance therapy is mycophenolate and a calcineurin inhibitor or sirolimus. Some maintenance therapy includes prednisone. The maintenance therapy is the medication that you take at home. We are able to measure the levels of the calcineurin inhibitors and sirolimus. Studies have shown optimal levels for these medications.
