A. It is the most common type of benign tracheal tumor in adults.

DISCUSSION: Squamous papillomatosis is the most common benign tracheal and bronchial tumor in adults. Up to 50% of untreated lesions may degenerate into squamous cell carcinoma. The lesion is associated with human papillomavirus types 6 and 11, and therefore, interferon therapy is under investigation. Most patients can be treated successfully by repeated bronchoscopic fulguration, laser ablation, or cryotherapy.
