DISCUSSION: Amphotericin B is effective against most fungal infections, including histoplasmosis and North American blastomycosis. Aspergillosis is caused by the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, an organism that is resistant to treatment with iodides, nystatin, hydroxystilbamidine, and amphotericin B. The treatment for this fungal infection is a surgical procedure, if the patient's condition permits. Surgical excision and amphotericin B usually are necessary to treat mucormycosis.

Itraconazole is the drug of choice for sporotrichosis. Itraconazole, ketoconazole, and fluconazole should be considered as primary or secondary drugs when treating systemic fungal infections.
