Dark-skinned individuals, premature infants, exclusively breastfed infants of mothers who are vitamin D deficient, individuals with limited exposure to sunlight, people residing at higher latitudes, diseases which lead to malabsorption of vitamin D such as celiac disease, biliary obstruction, pancreatic insufficiency, individuals on medications such as anticonvulsants.
Normal vitamin D levels
• Sufficiency—25 hydroxy vitamin D of 30–100 ng/mL
• Insufficiency—25 hydroxy vitamin D of 21–29 ng/mL
• Deficiency—25 hydroxy vitamin D below 20 ng/mL
