In achalasia:

there is a deficiency of ganglion cells in the myenteric plexus which appear to be associated with a loss of cells in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve
the vascular component of the pharyngoesophageal junction is affected, causing varicose veins
the defect is seen only in the pharyngoesophageal transition
the striated muscles are only affected
there is an increase of the perikarya of Auerbach myenteric plexus and of Meissner submucous plexus
