D: The parietal pleura (attached to the chest wall) and the visceral pleura (attached to the lung) are in very close contact but “separated” by pleural fl uid within which there is a pressure that is less than atmospheric pressure (i.e. negative). This means that the lungs are stuck to the chest wall and expand when it does.
