When performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) why do you use the “heel” of the hand rather than the whole palm and fingers?

  1. A greater force can be exerted by the “heel” of the hand which results in a greater pressure being exerted.
  2. . Using the “heel” places a smaller area of the hand in contact with the sternum, hence allows a greater force to be exerted.
  3. The same force can be applied to a smaller area of the sternum which is less able to resist the greater downward pressure.
  4. The resuscitator’s wrist is less likely to be damaged by applying CPR in this way.

C: Maximum force during CPR is determined by the strength of the resuscitator. Maximum pressure in addition depends on minimising the area upon which the force is being applied. The heel of the hand allows a small area to be used.
